Public Employment After Retirement

The limits only apply to superannuation retirees who go back to work in the public sector

  • 1200 hours is the maximum hours a retiree can work in a year
    • The public sector is any Massachusetts public entity, whether it's for the state, county, municipal, city, town, district or authority
  • Earning Limitation
    • Can earn the difference between the current salary of the position they retired from and their retirement benefit
    • After being retired for one full calendar year, the retiree can add $15,000 to this calculation.

Adherence to the post-retirement restrictions in any calendar year is the statutory responsibility of the employee and the employer.

Private Sector Employment After Retirement

Superannuation retirees do not have limits for working in the private sector

Disability retirees are subject to earnings limitations, contact the retirement office if you are a disability retiree and plan to return to work
